Best Winlator Settings for Bethesda Games (Oblivion/Fallout 3)

If you’re anything like me, Bethesda games hold a special place in your heart. Titles like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3 are absolute classics! But what if I told you that you could relive these legendary adventures right on your Android device?

Yes, you heard that right! With Winlator, a powerful Windows emulator for Android, you can bring these masterpieces back to life in the palm of your hands.

I’ve spent hours testing and tweaking the settings on my Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, and today, I’m going to share the best Winlator settings to get the smoothest experience possible.

So grab your phone, follow along, and let’s get started!

Setting Up Your Winlator Container

Before we dive into the world of Tamriel or the wastelands, we need to configure our Winlator container for the best performance. Here’s the setup I used:

  • Screen Size: 800×600 (Best balance between performance and visuals)
  • Driver: Turnip Zink (Ensures stable graphics rendering)
  • DX Wrapper: DXVK 2.2 (Helps translate DirectX calls smoothly)
  • Processor Affinity: All (Uses all available cores for better performance)
  • GPU: GTX 1070 (Best setting for high-end Android devices)
  • Video Memory Size: 4096MB (Boosts textures and load times)

Pro Tip: Navigate to the DX Components tab and set “DirectSound” to Native (Windows) for proper in-game audio output.

Installing the Games on Winlator

Now that Winlator is configured, let’s install the games. I highly recommend buying your games from GOG—it’s affordable, DRM-free, and perfect for emulation!

Follow these steps to install your game:

  1. Purchase the game from GOG and download the 3-part offline backup installer.
  2. Transfer the downloaded files to your Android device.
  3. Launch Winlator and open your configured container.
  4. Install the game from within Winlator, just like you would on a PC.

Once installed, you’re all set to start tweaking the in-game settings for optimal performance!

Optimizing the In-Game Settings

Every Bethesda game needs a bit of tweaking to run smoothly on an Android device. Here’s what worked best for me:

  1. Open the game and navigate to Video Settings.
  2. Set the resolution to 800×600 – it keeps the game smooth without sacrificing visuals.
  3. Set textures to Medium – this helps maintain a balance between graphics and FPS.
  4. Adjust all distance values to two clicks – reduces lag while keeping draw distances decent.
  5. Play with the distance and shadow settings – tweak them until you hit your desired frame rate.

Pro Tip: Keep shadows on the lower side—Bethesda shadows can be FPS killers!

Setting Up On-Screen Controls

Using a physical controller sounds great, but during my tests, it caused frequent crashes and frame drops. That’s why I strongly recommend sticking with on-screen controls. Winlator’s recommended control layout works best for these games!

Boosting Performance with Mods

If your phone struggles with performance, don’t worry! There are performance mods that can help boost FPS. Head over to Nexus Mods and download mods that suit your device’s capabilities.

For Oblivion:

  • The Unofficial Oblivion Patch (Fixes bugs and improves stability)
  • Patches for all DLCs (Essential for a smoother experience)

For Fallout 3:

  • Fallout 3 Optimization Overhaul (Improves FPS drastically)
  • Additional files for all DLCs (Fixes common glitches)
  • Fellout (Removes the green tint, enhances visuals, and gives a slight FPS boost)

Pro Tip: Always read the mod descriptions before installing—they often have important installation steps!

Additional Tips for a Smoother Experience

Here are a few more tricks to keep your game running at its best:

  • Clear your phone’s RAM before launching Winlator—this frees up resources for a smoother experience.
  • Avoid switching control schemes until the game has fully loaded—it prevents crashes.
  • These settings also work for Fallout: New Vegas! If you’re a fan, you’re in for a treat.

And there you have it! With these optimized Winlator settings, you can dive back into the immersive worlds of Oblivion and Fallout 3—right on your Android device. Whether you’re wandering through Cyrodiil or surviving the wastelands, these settings ensure you get the smoothest gameplay possible.

Enjoy the nostalgia, the adventure, and the thrill—all in the palm of your hands!

If you found this guide helpful, let me know! I’d love to hear about your experiences.

  1. I have a samsung s21 ultra phone and I can’t add a flash drive to winlator. I’ve tried almost everything and nothing helps. please help me add a flash drive so i can install games with it. the flash drive is called 123, I also found its id in the explorer.
in the section the driver prescribed the following:
    /storage/123
    /storage/id of the flash drive
    /mnt/media_rw
    /mnt/media_rw/123
    /mnt/media_rw/id of the flash drive
also i clicked on the choose folder button, selected the flash drive and clicked allow winlator to use it
